Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding Covid-19 Alert Levels Cycling New Zealand are in the disappointing position of having to cancel the Vantage Age Group Track National Championships, which were due to be held at the Avantidrome from 10 - 13 March 2021. Please refer to the "Covid-19 Update" tab below for more.

After the unfortunate cancellation of the Vantage Age Group Track National Championships, Cycling New Zealand, the Avantidrome and Cycling Southland are collaborating on planning South Island and North Island carnivals. This initiative acknowledges that riders have trained to race and are naturally incredibly disappointed they won’t have this opportunity as planned next week.  With support from both Cycling Southland and the Avantidrome, this gives riders the opportunity to race ‘locally’ and the best chance of being able to race in the still uncertain Covid-19 levels in venues that supports easier travel and logistics with the ability to manage numbers.

ILT Stadium Southland will be hosting the South Island Age Group Track Carnival from Thursday 11th – Saturday 13th March for all Age Group riders from the South Island, and the Avantidrome in Cambridge will be hosting the North Island Age Group Track Carnival across the same dates for all Age Group riders from the North Island. These events are being run by the Avantidrome and Cycling Southland with support from Cycling New Zealand.

Both venues will be considering their responsibilities under the different Covid-19 Alert Levels and restrictions on numbers may apply. To assist with providing the most riders with these opportunities to support both organisers, if you are interested in participating then you must register your interest in the island of your residence.

Due to the likely restrictions on participating numbers, only U15/U17 and Masters will be permitted.

More details from the respective venues will follow in the coming days around entry and costs.

Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding Covid-19 Alert Levels Cycling New Zealand are in the disappointing position of having to cancel next week’s Vantage Age Group Track National Championships.

The event was due to start next Tuesday at the Avantidrome in Cambridge and with the next government update not due until this weekend it is appropriate to make the decision now as we know many of our teams and riders from outside the Waikato are beginning to travel in the next few days.

In addition, if any of our participating regions are still (or go into) in Alert Level 3 and are unable to travel this would compromise the integrity and sustainability of the event.

While we have a plan to operate under Alert Level 2, due to the number of riders, the management of this plan would also likely have a significant impact on the programme, timing and therefore the integrity of the event.

We acknowledge this decision will have a significant impact on our junior and masters riders who have been training and looking forward to this, their pinnacle track event, for some time.  We also recognise they will be disappointed along with team officials, volunteers, officials and supporters.

This decision was not taken lightly, however, the uncertainty, together with the timing of the next Government announcement, requires us to make a decision now to enable teams and riders to adjust travel plans and other logistics.  We very much appreciate the support from those who have assisted with this decision from across the country.

Further details on what an alternative racing opportunity for these riders could look like will be announced in the next few weeks after following collaboration with Cycling New Zealand Road & Track and our centres.
