Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding Covid-19 Alert Levels Cycling New Zealand are in the disappointing position of having to cancel the Vantage Age Group Track National Championships, which were due to be held at the Avantidrome from 10 - 13 March 2021. Please refer to the "Covid-19 Update" tab below for more.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 Vantage Age Group Track Championships due to Covid-19 back in March, Cycling New Zealand Road & Track (CNZR&T) had been looking for alternative racing opportunities for those impacted riders.

When looking for alternative dates, considerations were given to ensuring a level playing field for all riders across the country to access training facilities to be able to prepare to compete to the national standard and to be able to represent themselves and their centre to their highest level.

CNZR&T are aware that from March each year, access to some outdoor tracks is limited and therefore the window for some of our riders to train to a level to be able to be competitive at a national level is limited.

As facilities become more readily available, any late competition will begin to impact the 2022 Track Season which begins in October/November. As such, CNZR&T have confirmed that the 2021 National Championships will not be rescheduled.  We acknowledge and understand that the past year has been highly disruptive (particular for youth and school riders).

CNZR&T would like to extend their thanks to Cycling Southland and the Avantidrome who were able to deliver regional competition opportunities while the country was still in Covid-19 restrictions and look forward to providing national competitions in 2022.

Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding Covid-19 Alert Levels Cycling New Zealand are in the disappointing position of having to cancel next week’s Vantage Age Group Track National Championships.

The event was due to start next Tuesday at the Avantidrome in Cambridge and with the next government update not due until this weekend it is appropriate to make the decision now as we know many of our teams and riders from outside the Waikato are beginning to travel in the next few days.

In addition, if any of our participating regions are still (or go into) in Alert Level 3 and are unable to travel this would compromise the integrity and sustainability of the event.

While we have a plan to operate under Alert Level 2, due to the number of riders, the management of this plan would also likely have a significant impact on the programme, timing and therefore the integrity of the event.

We acknowledge this decision will have a significant impact on our junior and masters riders who have been training and looking forward to this, their pinnacle track event, for some time.  We also recognise they will be disappointed along with team officials, volunteers, officials and supporters.

This decision was not taken lightly, however, the uncertainty, together with the timing of the next Government announcement, requires us to make a decision now to enable teams and riders to adjust travel plans and other logistics.  We very much appreciate the support from those who have assisted with this decision from across the country.

Further details on what an alternative racing opportunity for these riders could look like will be announced in the next few weeks after following collaboration with Cycling New Zealand Road & Track and our centres.

Entries for the Age Group Track National Championships are accepted through Cycling New Zealand Road and Track Centres only. Please contact your centre to apply for entry.
