2020/2021 New Zealand Championship Vantage National Championship Track Calendar announced

Cycling New Zealand Road & Track have confirmed the 2020/2021 track calendar with the country’s two indoor velodromes sharing the key national events.

The elite riders will head to the world’s most southern indoor velodrome at Invercargill while the age group competitors will do battle in Cambridge.

The Vantage Elite & U19 Track Championships will be held at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome from 24-27 February 2021 and the Vantage Age Group Track Championships will be contested at the Avantidrome from 10-13 March 2021.

A change from recent years will see the Vantage Elite Omnium and Madison Championships separated from the main championship event and incorporated into a new 3-day Carnival-style event in Cambridge from 27-29 November 2020. 

This announcement has been welcomed by the Vantage New Zealand Elite team, with Cycling New Zealand’s High Performance Director Martin Barras excited to have a calendar that will continue to support their Olympic build-up and provide more opportunities for age group riders to race against elite, which supports the development of both sets of riders.

“By splitting the Omnium and Madison Championships it will enable our elite riders to compete in more events and create more meaningful racing. It would also provide an opportunity for juniors to press their claims for selection for the 2021 Junior World championships.”

The Cambridge 3-day Carnival will also include novel racing formats and will be open to ParaCyclists, Under-17 to Elite riders.  Further details on this programme will be released in the near future.

Consideration was given to the combining of both of the Elite and Age Group events and while the decision was made to keep them separated for 2021, this proposal will be discussed further.
