New Zealand riders have produced some stunning performances on the world stage in Europe in recent days.

George Bennett (Team Jumbo Visma) has won the Gran Piemonte race in Italy, for his second professional victory.

He attached on the final climb of the 187km race to Barolo, in the wine region of Piedmont. He went with 8km to go on a wet day, and held off UAE Team Emirates rider Diego Ulissi for the win.

Commonwealth Games mountain bike gold medallist, Sam Gaze had his best result as a road rider, finishing second in the prologue in the Tour Warszawska in Warsaw, riding for his Alpecin-Fenix team.

There was plenty to celebrate for kiwi women as well, with Mikayla Harvey winning the under-23 young rider classification in the Strade Bianche in central Italy.

She finished with a select handful of riders, 5:21 minutes down on winner Annemiek Van Vleuten. Considering the high-class field, which featured four current and former Road World Champions in the top 10, her performance was extremely impressive, and the 12th placing was a remarkable achievement.

This follows the news that Mikayla will extend her time with Equipe Paule Ka team.

“I’ve grown so much as a rider since I’ve joined, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds, as we continue our journey together,” she said.

There were three other Kiwis in the World Tour field including Niamh Fisher-Black, Georgia Williams and Ella Harris, who unfortunately crashed in the recon.

Last week Mitchelton-Scott rider Dion Smith produced a stunning performance to finish sixth in the World Tour, Milano-Sanremo, finishing in the sprint for the honours after a superb display in the one day classic.
