New Zealand mountain bikers seventh in XCO team relay

2025 UCI MTB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 8

The New Zealand mixed relay team has finished seventh at the UCI MTB World Championships in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

It is the first time New Zealand has fielded a team in the mixed relay in recent memory, with a rider from each grade completed the short course lap comprising junior, under-23 and elite male and female.

France won from Italy and Switzerland with New Zealand the first nation outside of Europe and North America to finish. The team comprised Ethan Rose (U23), Samara Maxwell (elite), Fletcher Adams (junior), Kayley McMillan (junior), Amelie Mackay (under-23) and Sam Gaze (elite).

“It’s a bit painful in the lungs but good fun,” said Gaze. “Super proud of my teammates and super nice to have a team relay squad with the New Zealand team especially over in Europe. Everyone can be proud of their rides and it’s a good opener for the racing that starts with the juniors tomorrow.”

Result: Mixed team relay: France 1:05.14, 1; Italy 1:05.48, 2; Switzerland 1:06.47.3. Also New Zealand 1:09.02, 7.
