Safeguarding & Child Protection

Safeguarding in sport isn’t just about policies or procedures — it’s about people.
It’s about creating safe environments where everyone, from elite athletes to grassroots participants, can thrive without fear of violence, harassment or abuse.

What Is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding in sport refers to all measures to prevent violence, harassment, or abuse to children or adults in sport and all recognition, reporting, response, and remedy activities undertaken to respond to actual or potential abuse or harmful behaviour. It means ensuring that sport is a space of respect, fairness, and safety for everyone.

This includes:

  • Children and young people

  • Athletes of all levels and ages

  • Coaches, volunteers, officials, and staff

  • Marginalised or vulnerable groups

Safeguarding is about prevention, protection, and empowerment. It ensures the systems around sport from training environments to governance structures — promote dignity, equity, and wellbeing.

Where Can I Report My Concerns?

Safeguarding and protection is everybody’s responsibility, and we all have the duty to report concerns. Witnessing harassment and abuse without saying anything can give the impression that such behaviour is acceptable. If you’re experiencing or you suspect someone else is suffering from harassment and abuse, you can find the process here.

If you believe a person is in immediate danger, please call the Police on 111. Contact Oranga Tamariki if you think a child or young person may be: experiencing abuse but you’re not sure if you should be concerned, and want advice, or just to talk things through.

Cycling New Zealand's Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy

Cycling New Zealand's Child Protection and Safeguarding policies aims at providing clarity around it's zero tolerance stance against behaviour that endangers children and vulnerable adults and their rights to participating in sport in an environment that is safe and nurturing.
