Background and Introduction:

Esport racing and training has become hugely popular in recent years due to improved technology; helping time-strapped cyclists ride at home and avoid inclement weather or busy city roads. Esport bike races have already been held and broadcasted online; drawing a virtual audience of fans. There has been a significant rise in the profile of these platforms due to the global lockdown due to Covid-19.

Esports have been formally endorsed by UCI who have recently released their first Esports regulations document, indicating that a Esports World Championship will occur within the next few years.

Cycling New Zealand recognise the value of these virtual platforms to support traditional outdoor racing, and are committed to developing opportunity/s through selected platforms that provide benefit for all our stakeholders; to create an ownership of the Esports category for the sport of Cycling.
