New Zealand track sprinters, led by triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ellesse Andrews, picked up some important qualifying points in Australia, ultimately towards the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Andrews won both the sprint and keirin UCI C1 event held as part of the famed Austral Wheel Race in Melbourne.
Teammate Rebecca Petch was second in the keirin final, while Sam Dakin won the keirin final, but was later relegated to 6th. Sam finished third in the sprint competition.
Earlier Andrews had topped sprint qualifiers in 11.016s with Petch fourth fastest in 11.227s, while Dakin was fifth fastest in the men in 9.971s.
Andrew accounted for Alessia McCraig 2-0 in the best of three sprint final. Meanwhile Dakin progressed to the semifinals where he lost to Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Azizulhasni Awang from Malaysia, but won the bronze medal ride over Australian Tom Cornish in two straight rides.
