Well-known Rotorua rider Dan Butterworth claimed the overall honours at the first official pump track national championships in Christchurch.
Rotorua’s Dan Butterworth prevailed to claim the first UCI Pump Track National Championship title, with the event held in partnership with Cycling New Zealand and Velosolutions.
The championship was staged at the new Nigel Mahan Pump Track by Velosolutions at the Bexley Reserve in Christchurch on Saturday, with the UCI world championship qualifier to be staged on Sunday.
Butterworth dominated the round of eight and round of four in the elite male class, before producing the fastest lap of the day of 17.53s to edge Christchurch’s Seth Stylie by 0.4sec in the final.
Stylie, a well-respected local gravity mountain biker, had been second fastest in all races through to the final.
The Rotorua rider has enjoyed success on the Pump Track circuit with top four finishes at the Crankworx finals in Canada and Cairns. He is well known in Rotorua in coaching young riders at the Rotorua BMX Club, and built dirt jumps for young riders to practice.
While there were no elite UCI female riders, there was plenty of plaudits for the female 15 years and over category, with Cassien Lewis winning through qualifying to take the category, with Alexandra’s Holly Oldham taking out the 17+ age group title..
The Christchurch rider was fastest in qualifying, with a winning time of 20.94s, just over a second faster than Oldham.
Cassien is an up and coming rider from the North Avon Christchurch BMX Club, who will be eligible to ride junior elite from next year.
Around 80 riders took part from under 10 years to over 50 years with several family groups competing.
