Announcement of the 2020 Schools Cycling Calendar

Cycling New Zealand Schools today announced the full calendar of 2020 cycling events.  These 11 events are sanctioned by School Sport NZ and Cycling New Zealand.

Cycling New Zealand Schools Chairman Brynn Gilbertson is delighted to see the continuation of the strong schools calendar and the continued growth particularly in Mountain Biking.  

“Schools cycling has shown incredible growth over the past few years so it’s fantastic that we have clubs and organisers putting their hand up to host these events.” 

“All three MTB events received multiple expressions of interest and we are delighted to award events to both new and returning hosts who we are confident will continue to deliver great racing, riding and social experiences for our schools riders.

Bike Methven (Methven) and PNP (Wellington) have been recognised for their work in 2019 with confirmation that the South and North Island events will be returning to these respective clubs and venues in March.

The Cycling New Zealand Schools National Mountain Bike Championships will be hosted in the Northland town of Paihia, less than three hours north of Auckland, in partnership with Waitangi MTB Park, Kerikeri MTB Club and Sport Northland who will be offering cross-country, enduro and downhill events.

The continued support from Cycling Marlborough sees the return of the Southern Tour in Blenheim who, in 2020 will also have the National Criterium Title up for grabs with the Northern Tour (Auckland) will see the return of the National Hill Climb and the Individual Time Trial titles as part of the two-day tour.

North and South Island Road events will return to their traditional homes of Cambridge and Christchurch with the annual rotation of the National Track Championships sees it combining with the North Island Track Championships.    This event will take place on the Monday and Tuesday morning following the Island Road events which will provide the opportunity for South Island riders to travel on Sunday to take part.

Continuing with the 2-1 rotation, the National Road Championships will remain in Palmerston North before its return to the South Island in 2021.
